…are a 6 piece group based in San Francisco.English transplant Matthew Edwards was formerly the singer and songwriter with acclaimed Le Grand Magistery recording artists The Music Lovers ('Matthew Edwards is quite probably the best songwriter in the world' – Big Takeover). The band released 3 albums and an EP. Matthew dissolved the group in the fall of 2009.Over the following months Matthew put together his new group the Unfortunates (named after the BS Johnson novel). He enlisted Sasha Bell on piano and organ formerly of Essex Green and Ladybug Transistor (Merge): Award-winning cellist/vocalist Adaiha McAdam-Somer; Drummer Kristina Vukic;. Bassist Jefferson Marshall (also of Assemble Head in Sunburst Sound;. On accordion is Matthew's former compadre from The Music Lovers Isaac Bonnell.In early 2011 the group began recording songs for a full-length album to be titled 'The Fates.' It is being produced/mixed by Eric Drew Feldman (PJ Harvey, Cpt Beefheart et al). As of March 2012 the record is almost complete. Featured on 3 songs is English guitarist Fred Frith, renowned for his work with Robert Wyatt, Eno, Henry Cow etc. A series of short films have been made for 5 songs by artist Peter Locke.The band curates events/concerts in off the track spaces in the Bay Area and beyond, eschewing standard rock clubs.
